Projection technology is now at a stage where we can provide a cost effective replacement to translites and green screens, with the advantage of being in-camera - allowing production to have faster turnaround, for a cheaper price than conventional LEDs.
Virtual Production allows us to create anything from period Paris for "The Collection", to transforming a bar in Cardiff, Wales to 1950s New York, using mapped plasma screens outside the windows, playing period plates. This required minimal blackout, and minimal invasion on the sidewalk outside. Productions include Harry Potter Whomping Willow water movement, Equals, The Collection, and Poet in New York, and Broadchurch.
Unlike LEDs projection allows for a wide viewing angle - as the screen can be shot at a steep angle to the camera without any moire or colour bleed issues that the latter would incur. This means that once set the screen does not have to be re-positioned, or adjusted to match the camera angle, allowing for fast turn-arounds.
There is also almost no limit to the size of the screen, in fact we currently hold the World Record for biggest projection in a film, having provided 24 x 10 meter screen for BBC’s Dracula 2020 TV series - showing the vampire coming out of the ocean, greeted by armed soldiers in trucks and a helicopter, storming down the beach towards him.
Many actors despise green-screens, and find it difficult to deliver convincing performances in such a sterile enviroment - scenic projection allows us to bridge the gap between on-location realism and studio controlled convenience.
Plates: We may shoot the background plates on your behalf, and supply them as part of the comprehensive package. Altenatively you may opt to provide the plates yourself, particularly if you intend to boost the plates with CGI - such as flying cars in the background of a sci-fi setting.
On-Set: We will position our screen & array of projectors in advance before your shoot, we may also provide specialised reactive lighting synchorized to the plates if needed, to augment the virtual production. On-set we are able to apply colour grading, re-framing, etc - to perfectly match the background plates to the camera.
